The Siruvani Vasagar Vattam, established on World Book Day (April 23) by G.R. Prakash of Coimbatore, and T. Subashini of Chennai has embarked on an ambitious plan of taking books to readers to revive reading habits.
Even if a person is interested in reading a book or magazine, she don’t find time to visit a book stall because of change in lifestyle, and work pressure, said Mr. Prakash.
We will deliver books at the doorsteps of readers who are fond of reading Tamil books for a nominal annual subscription, he added.
The forum was established in consultation with leading writer Nanjil Nadan. It has so far published eight books in the last seven months.
The ninth book is in print. Another four books will be out before March 2018.
The books published are: Navam , a compendium of essays by Nanjil Nadan,Idhaya Nadham, a novel by N. Chidambara Subramanian, and Poongothu , essays of Ashoka Mithran. As many as 180 people have enrolled as members from across the State, and neighbouring Karnataka. Among them, 60 % are senior citizens.
The centre is taking efforts enrol more youth, said Mr. Prakash.
